Taking Care of The Elderly
Disclaimer first: I am not a doctor, a nurse, or any kind of medical professional. The information on these pages is based strictly on my own experiences and intended as a starting point to gain knowledge. DO NOT ACT SOLEY ON INFORMATION FROM THESE PAGES. Consult with a medical professional before making any decisions.
When your parent or loved one gets older…what do you do? Who can you turn to for help? Who do you ask questions of when you don’t even know which questions to ask?
I had a house land on me when my father had a stroke. There were so many questions I had, so many extra responsibilities I was completely unprepared for. I had no idea who to turn to and how to even start finding out what I needed to know.
This website is my attempt to assist you in, if not answering those questions, at least getting a starting point and possibly knowing which questions to ask.
I will cover:
-
The Basics
-
Strokes
-
Dementia
-
Extended hospital stays
-
Extended nursing home stays
-
Senior Living Facilities
-
Power of Attorney (legal, financial, and medical)
-
Hoarding assistance
-
Taking care of the caregiver
-
And anything else I can think of.
Here is my story –the short version - and it does have a happy ending…or rather a happy continuation.
Short Version:
Moved parents into assisted living. One week later, father has stroke – goes to hospital. Stays in hospital for a month due to complications, then a nursing home for two months. During the interim, we moved my parents’ belongings out of the now unaffordable senior facility, into storage, then into a new and affordable facility…along with my parents themselves.
